Color:  Tallahatta Chert is an opaline rich chalcedonic multicolored chert with colors of red, amber, yellow, blue, brown, gray, and white depending upon the impurities present when formed.  Banding, streaking, or mottling may be present.

Distribution Comments:

  Tallahatta Chert is associated with the Basic City Member of the Tallahatta Formation, Clairbourne Group.  Tallahatta Chert is not abundant occurring in fractures, voids, and burrows in the Tallahatta Quartzite in east central Mississippi to west central Alabama.  Most commonly found as cobble in the river beds of southwestern Alabama, primarily Washington and Clarke county Alabama.
